Bundaberg

Bundaberg is a working sugar city on the Burnett River, with older riverside suburbs, newer estates to the south and industrial pockets near the airport and the mills. Auto electrical work here ranges from family car batteries and air conditioning to cane-season trucks, farm utes and fleet vehicles.

Suburbs in Bundaberg

The city centre sits on the south bank of the Burnett River, with Bundaberg North across the Burnett Bridge and the Don Tallon Bridge. Bundaberg East has the rum distillery and the sugar refinery, while Takalvan Street runs south past the Millbank and Avoca shops to the airport at Kensington. Svensson Heights and Thabeban carry industrial estates, and Kepnock and Walkervale are mostly houses and schools. Cane paddocks surround the city, so from July to December harvesters, haul trucks and cane trains share the roads. Low-lying streets near the river also carry a long flood history.

Common auto electrical jobs in Bundaberg

Bundaberg mixes suburban driving with farm, freight and mill work, so a lot of the jobs here involve vehicles that work hard in heat, dust and humidity.

Batteries in a long warm season

Bundaberg's summers are hot and humid, and the warm weather hangs around for much of the year. Heat is what wears out most car batteries, and the damage builds quietly until a battery that seemed fine simply gives up in a car park. If yours is more than three years old, have it load tested before summer rather than waiting for slow cranking. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains what the numbers mean.

Cane season trucks and harvest gear

From around July to December the crush is on, and cane trains run day and night across the district. Haulout trucks, harvesters and support utes work long shifts in dust, often in the dark. That is hard on 24V charging systems, work lights, beacons and the wiring looms that run past hot engines. Operators who get lights, alternators and battery connections checked before the season starts usually lose far fewer hours once the harvest is running.

Air conditioning that has to keep up

In a Bundaberg summer, a car without working air conditioning is hard to live with. Many faults that feel like a gas problem are electrical: a blown fuse, a tired relay, a fan that has stopped, or a compressor clutch that won't engage. Those can be tested and fixed by an auto electrician. If the system needs refrigerant work, that must be done by a licensed technician. Our guide to common car air conditioning problems covers the usual symptoms.

Water in the wiring after big wet seasons

The Burnett River has flooded parts of Bundaberg many times, and the January 2013 flood was the worst on record. Even a smaller wet season can leave water sitting in plugs, earth points and fuse boxes on cars parked low or driven through deep water. The signs often turn up weeks later as flickering lights, odd warning lights or a battery that drains overnight. Never drive into floodwater, and if a car has been submerged, don't try to start it until it has been checked.
