Common auto electrical jobs in Avoca

Avoca is home to almost 5,000 people, wrapped by the Burnett River on the north and west, with the big shopping centre on Takalvan Street and Avoca State School in the middle. Families here tow, commute and do a lot of shopping centre trips.

Towbar wiring on a family SUV

Many families in Avoca tow a camper trailer, caravan or boat with a late-model SUV. These vehicles often have computer-controlled lighting, and splicing trailer wires into the tail lights can upset the system. A vehicle-specific towbar wiring harness plugs into the factory connectors and keeps the car's systems happy. Our guide asking do I need a towbar wiring harness explains why it's usually the better option.

Brake controllers for caravans

If your caravan has electric brakes, the tow vehicle needs a brake controller to work them. It's mounted near the driver and wired with heavy enough cable to deliver full braking, plus a proper earth. A poorly wired controller can give weak or jerky braking. Set it up with the van loaded, on a quiet street. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers wiring and adjustment.

Cameras for the the big shopping centre car park

Shopping centre car parks are full of trolleys, kids and cars reversing out at the same time. A reversing camera or rear parking sensors take a lot of stress out of it. On a towing vehicle, a camera also helps with lining up the towball. Many older cars can have a camera added to the number plate area with a mirror screen. Ask for one that suits your car's existing screen if it has one.

Start-stop SUVs need the right battery

Many newer SUVs have start-stop systems that switch the engine off at the lights. These cars usually need an AGM or EFB battery, and some need the new battery registered with a scan tool so the charging system knows what's fitted. Putting in a cheaper standard battery can lead to early failure and start-stop that no longer works. The differences are covered in our guide to car battery types.

Keeping the caravan battery charged on the road

Many Avoca families tow north to Agnes Water or south to Hervey Bay for the holidays. If the caravan battery isn't charging while you drive, the fridge can run it flat overnight. Newer vehicles with smart alternators often need a DC-DC charger to charge a caravan battery properly. Check the wiring size, the fuses and the charge pin on the plug. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing has more.

Avoca auto electrical questions

Do I need an electric brake controller for my caravan?

Most caravans with electric brakes need a controller in the tow vehicle, and heavier trailers are required by law to have brakes the driver can operate. Check your caravan's compliance plate for its mass, then check the current Queensland and national towing rules. An auto electrician can tell you which controller suits your vehicle and fit it with the right wiring.

Why did my start-stop stop working after a battery change?

The new battery may be the wrong type, or the car may not know it has been replaced. Many start-stop cars watch the battery's condition closely and disable the system if it seems weak. Fitting the correct AGM or EFB battery and registering it with a scan tool usually brings start-stop back. Some cars also need a short drive to relearn.

Local tip for Avoca

Before a school holiday trip, hook up the caravan in the driveway a week early. Check every light, the brake controller reading and whether the van battery shows charging with the engine running. Finding a fault on Monday gives you time to fix it. Finding it on the Bruce Highway at the start of the holidays is far more stressful and usually costs more.
