Bargara

The Bargara coast runs from the port at Burnett Heads south through Bargara, Innes Park and Coral Cove to Elliott Heads, with Kalkie on the road in from the city and Moore Park Beach across the Burnett River to the north. Salt air, boats, caravans, beach 4WDs and the turtle nesting season shape most of the auto electrical work here.

Suburbs in Bargara

Only cane fields separate Bundaberg from the coast, and Bargara Road carries most of the traffic out through Kalkie. Bargara is the busy centre, with holiday units, retirement resorts and shops on Bauer Street. South of it, Innes Park, Coral Cove and Elliott Heads line a rocky shore inside the Great Sandy Marine Park. North, Burnett Heads has the port, the boat harbour and cane tramways. Moore Park Beach is reached from Bundaberg North and allows beach driving on set sections. In between sits Mon Repos, one of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting beaches in the South Pacific.

Common auto electrical jobs in Bargara

Along this stretch of coast, most jobs come back to salt, sand, towing and a turtle season that runs right through summer.

Salt spray on the Woongarra Coast

The rocky shoreline from Bargara to Elliott Heads throws up fine spray when the wind is onshore, and it drifts well back from the beach. Cars parked outside soon get a salty film on the battery, earth straps and any exposed plugs. The first signs are slow starting, flickering dash lights or a fault that only shows up on damp mornings. A clean and protect of the battery terminals twice a year stops most of it. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals shows the method.

Ramps from Burnett Heads to Innes Park

Boaties on this coast launch from the harbour ramp at Burnett Heads, the Bargara ramp on the Esplanade or the ramp at Palmers Creek in Innes Park. Every launch puts trailer lights and plugs into salt water. Globes that aren't sealed fill with water and corrode, and earths rust through quickly. Submersible LED lights, tinned wire and a good earth wire to the trailer frame are worth the money. Rinse the trailer with fresh water when you get home.

Driving the coast in turtle season

Turtles nest on Bundaberg's beaches from about November to March, and artificial light can confuse hatchlings heading for the water. The council asks drivers to avoid high beams near the coast at night and to switch headlights off when parked at the beach. That makes driving lights and light bars worth a second thought. Wire them so they can't come on with the high beams by accident, and keep them off near the beaches. Moore Park Beach also closes to vehicles at night during the season.

Cars and caravans that sit between trips

Many coastal homes here have a car that only goes out a few times a week, or a caravan waiting in the side yard for the next trip. Batteries in vehicles that sit slowly lose charge, and salty air speeds up corrosion on terminals. A smart charger or maintainer on a timer keeps them ready, and a quick terminal check each month catches corrosion early. Our guide on why a battery keeps going flat covers other causes to rule out.
