Common auto electrical jobs in Kalkie

Kalkie is bounded on the west by the Burnett River and crossed by Bargara Road, where the Bundaberg Ring Road ends. It has a historic state school on Bargara Road, a private Prep to Year 12 school on Mezger Street and plenty of newer homes.

Which trailer plug do you need?

Kalkie families tow everything from box trailers to camper trailers and boats, often heading out Bargara Road to the beach. Many newer SUVs come with a 12-pin plug, while a lot of trailers use a 7-pin flat plug. An adaptor works for occasional use, but if you tow often it's better to match the plugs. Our guide on 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs explains the differences.

Dashcams for Bargara Road

Bargara Road is a busy run between the city and the coast, with school traffic, tourists and cane season trucks. A dashcam gives you a record if something happens. A front and rear camera covers both directions. Power it from a fused circuit that switches off with the ignition, unless you want parking mode. Tuck the cable along the headlining and pillar trim, away from any side curtain airbags.

Hybrids on the school run

More Kalkie families are driving hybrids for the stop-start school run and the short trip to town. Hybrids still have a normal 12V battery that runs the computers and starts the system, and when it gets weak the car may not power up. Testing and replacing it is routine. The high-voltage battery, orange cables and the parts connected to them are for licensed professionals with the right training and equipment only.

Replacing a start-stop battery

Many family SUVs in Kalkie's newer estates have start-stop, which puts extra strain on the battery. When it's time for a new one, it must be the right type, often AGM or EFB. Some cars also need the new battery registered so the charging system adjusts. Fitting the wrong type can cause early failure. Our guide on how to replace a car battery explains the steps and what to check.

Trailer lights after the river ramp

Kalkie has its own boat ramp on McGills Road, giving easy access to the Burnett River. The river is tidal here, and the salty water still corrodes trailer light fittings and wiring. If your trailer lights flicker or one side won't work, check the earth connections and the plug pins first. Fitting submersible LED lights and sealing joins with heat-shrink stops most repeat problems.

Kalkie auto electrical questions

Is Mon Repos in Kalkie?

No. Mon Repos is its own locality on the coast, between Bargara and Burnett Heads, and most of its beach is in the Mon Repos Conservation Park. From Kalkie, you reach it by heading out along Bargara Road towards the coast. During turtle season, keep high beams off near the beach at night and switch headlights off when parked.

Can any auto electrician work on my hybrid?

Many auto electricians can handle the 12V side of a hybrid, such as the small battery, lights, cameras and accessories. Work on the high-voltage system must only be done by licensed professionals trained and equipped for it. When booking, mention it's a hybrid so they can confirm they're set up for the job.

Local tip for Kalkie

If you tow from Kalkie, set aside ten minutes before the first trip of the season to test the trailer lights in the driveway. Check the indicators, brake lights and tail lights, and look at the plug pins for corrosion. A bit of dielectric grease on the pins helps. It's much easier than finding a fault on the roadside on the way to the coast.
