Common auto electrical jobs in Woodgate
Woodgate's population roughly doubled between 2006 and 2021, yet many homes are still weekenders or retirement places. Beach access, several boat ramps and the Burrum Coast National Park next door give it a very different mix of work from Childers.
After a run down the beach
Vehicles can drive Woodgate Beach from the southern access, heading south towards the Burrum River on the hard sand between the tide marks. It's a great drive, but wet sand and spray get into places you can't see: the wiring under the chassis, the trailer socket, the back of the alternator and the plugs on parking sensors. Hose the underside, wheel arches and tow bar with fresh water the same day, but don't blast the engine bay electrics. Then check that every light still works before your next trip.

Launching at Theodolite Creek and Walkers Point
Woodgate has boat ramps on Theodolite Creek Road and at Walkers Point, and both mean backing a trailer into salt water. Old-style trailer lights fill with water, and the bulbs, contacts and earth wires corrode quickly. Sealed LED lamps last much longer. Unplug the trailer before it goes in so a hot globe doesn't crack in cold water, and give the plug a spray once you're home. If something stops working, our guide on why trailer lights stop working helps find the cause.

Cars that wait for the weekend
A car left at a Woodgate holiday house for a month will often be flat when you return. Alarms, keyless entry and on-board computers all draw a little power, and in a few weeks that adds up. Salt air on the terminals speeds things along. A battery maintainer plugged in while you're away keeps it topped up without overcharging. If there's no power point near the car, disconnecting the negative terminal works, though you may need radio codes. Our guide on how to charge a car battery covers the right charger to use.

Power for camping at Burrum Point
Burrum Point camping area, beside Woodgate Beach, is reached by 4WD only, and generators aren't allowed. Campers rely on vehicle power for fridges, lights and charging phones. Running a fridge off the starting battery for a weekend is a common way to need a tow back to town. An auxiliary battery fed by a DC-DC charger while you drive, plus a solar panel at camp, keeps everything running and leaves the main battery for starting. Read our guide comparing a DC-DC charger or isolator to see which fits your setup.

Kangaroos in town and on Woodgate Road
Woodgate is known for kangaroos, which can turn up in big numbers in town as well as on the long run in along Woodgate Road and Goodwood Road. At dusk you need every bit of light you can get. Many locals add LED driving lights, which must be wired through a relay and a fuse and switch off with the high beam. Check headlight aim too, as a lamp pointing at the road a few metres ahead is almost as bad as no lamp. Our guide on wiring a 12V relay shows the layout.

Woodgate auto electrical questions
Can I drive on Woodgate Beach at night?
Bundaberg Regional Council asks drivers to avoid night driving on beaches, especially in summer, because headlights can confuse nesting turtles and hatchlings. Use only the signed access, stay on the hard sand between the low and high tide marks and keep off the dunes. Rules can change, so check the council's current beach driving information before you go.
Will salt from beach driving damage my car's electrics?
Over time, yes. Salt doesn't usually cause an instant fault, but it creeps into plugs and earth points and slowly increases resistance. Lights dim, sensors throw codes, and charging can suffer. Rinsing the underside with fresh water after each beach run, keeping plugs greased and checking earth straps every few months stops most of the damage before it starts.
My car sat at the holiday house for weeks. Is jump starting it safe?
Usually, as long as you connect the leads in the right order and the battery isn't swollen, cracked or leaking. If it has been flat for weeks it may not hold a charge afterwards, so get it tested once the car is running. Modern cars can be sensitive to voltage spikes, so a quality jump starter is often a safer choice than another car.
Local tip for Woodgate
Keep a small kit in the car for Woodgate trips: a tube of dielectric grease, a can of contact cleaner, spare trailer globes or a spare LED lamp, and a few fuses. After every beach run or boat launch, spend five minutes with a hose and the grease on the trailer plug and tow bar socket. It's the cheapest corrosion protection you'll ever buy.
