Common auto electrical jobs in Mount Perry

Mount Perry boomed after copper was found in 1869 and had more than 1,600 people in 1911. Today it's home to about 490 people in North Burnett Regional Council, with lookouts, a section of the Bicentennial National Trail and the Boolboonda Tunnel nearby.

Through the Boolboonda Tunnel

The Boolboonda Tunnel, about 11 km north-east of town, is a 19th-century railway tunnel cut through granite, and you can drive through it. It's unlined, about 190 metres long and very dark inside, so working headlights matter. Switch them on before you enter and drive slowly. If one headlight is dead, check the fuse as well as the globe, as some cars fuse each side separately. Our guide on checking and replacing a fuse explains how to find the right one.

Climbing the range

The Monto–Mount Perry Road climbs to the top of the range, and long climbs in low gear on a hot day make the engine and its electrics work hard. The cooling fans run more, the air conditioning runs flat out, and the alternator carries a heavy load at modest speed. A failing fan relay or fan motor often shows itself here first, as a temperature gauge that creeps up on the climb. Check the fans and their fuses before summer. If the air conditioning needs refrigerant work, use a licensed technician.

Horse floats for the Bicentennial National Trail

An 18 km section of the Bicentennial National Trail runs through the Mount Perry area, and trail riders bring horse floats from all over. A loaded float on hilly roads needs brakes that work smoothly, which usually means an electric brake controller in the tow vehicle. The controller needs good wiring, a solid earth and a gain setting that suits the load. Test it on a quiet stretch before heading down a steep grade. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers the setup.

Mine and contractor vehicles

The Mt Rawdon gold mine near Mount Perry has brought mine-spec utes and contractor vehicles to the area. Site rules often call for beacons, extra lighting, reversing alarms and isolator switches, and all of it has to survive dust and corrugations. Accessories should run through relays and fuses from a properly protected supply, not tapped into existing circuits. Neat, labelled wiring also makes site inspections easier. Our guide on wiring a 12V relay shows the basic circuit.

Fridges for the long run to town

With bigger shopping trips often meaning a run to Bundaberg or Gayndah, many Mount Perry households carry a fridge or freezer in the vehicle for the drive home. Plugged into the starting battery, a fridge left running at a stop can drain it. Moving the fridge onto its own auxiliary battery solves that, and the vehicle tops it up as you drive. Our comparison of a DC-DC charger or isolator helps you choose how to charge it.

Mount Perry auto electrical questions

Is Mount Perry in Bundaberg Regional Council?

No. Mount Perry is in North Burnett Regional Council. It was the only town in the old Perry Shire, which merged into North Burnett in 2008. Even so, the main road to the coast runs through Gin Gin to Bundaberg, so many residents use services in the Bundaberg region for shopping, parts and repairs.

What should I check before driving to Mount Perry from the coast?

Make sure your battery is in good health, all your lights work and your cooling fans run when the engine is hot. The roads are rural with long gaps between services, and phone coverage can vary. Carry a jump starter, spare fuses and water. If you're towing, check the trailer lights and brake controller before you leave Gin Gin.

Local tip for Mount Perry

In a town as far from a workshop as Mount Perry, a little preparation goes a long way. Learn where your vehicle's fuse boxes are, keep the owner's manual in the glovebox, and carry a fuse kit and a test light. Many faults that look serious, such as dead headlights or a silent fridge socket, turn out to be a single blown fuse.
